What to do right now

Actions in priority order
If you live or work in a flood zone

Move vehicles, secure outdoor items, prepare to shelter in place.

  1. Move your vehicles to higher ground now

If your vehicle is parked in any of the flood zones below, move it to higher ground immediately. Free temporary parking is available at Park Place Garage and the Calvert St. lot for residents in affected zones.

Free flood parking locations: Park Place Garage (160 West St.) · Calvert St. Garage · Hillman Garage (60 Knighton Pl.) — bring proof of address showing you live in an affected zone.
  2. Secure outdoor furniture, trash bins, and loose items

Bring inside anything that can float away or become projectiles. Tie down what can't be moved. Trash and recycling collection is suspended in affected areas through Monday — keep bins indoors.

  3. Avoid the affected streets — do not drive through flooded roads

Just 6 inches of moving water can knock a person down. 1 foot can sweep a vehicle away. If you encounter a flooded road, turn around. See the map and street list below for closures.

Annapolis Police have set up barricades at known flood points. Do not move barricades or attempt to drive past them — this is a traffic violation and creates rescue situations that endanger first responders.
  4. Charge devices, fill water containers, and gather essentials

Even without power loss, prepare for the possibility. Charge phones, fill bathtubs and large containers with clean water in case of water service interruption, and have flashlights, medications, and important documents accessible.

  5. If water enters your home, move to the highest level and call 911

Do not attempt to wade through floodwater. Get to the highest dry level of your home. Call 911 if you are trapped, injured, or unable to safely evacuate. Stay away from electrical outlets and standing water.

  6. Check on neighbors, especially elderly and disabled residents

If you can safely do so, check in with neighbors who may need help. Elderly residents and people with mobility challenges may not have heard the warnings. The city's Reassurance Program team will be checking enrolled residents — but neighborhood watch is faster.

What NOT to do

Avoid making this worse
  • Don't drive through flooded streets — most flood fatalities involve vehicles.
  • Don't walk in flood water — currents are stronger than they appear, and water hides downed power lines, sewage, and debris.
  • Don't move barricades — these are placed strategically and moving them creates real danger for others.
  • Don't call 911 for non-emergencies — for flooding reports, closed streets, or downed trees, use 311 instead so 911 lines stay open for life threats.
  • Don't use elevators if power is unreliable in your building. Use stairs.
  • Don't return to flooded areas until the all-clear — even after water recedes, structural and electrical hazards remain.
